New York – The Market

Photo submitted by © J. Matthew Riva

    The Market [J. Matthew Riva]

    the crowd surges
    upon shelves
    of endless bounty
    the aroma
    of herbs and green
    of flowers and fruit
    of bread and honey
    of apples and maple
    they swirl about
    wide open eyes
    their voices loud
    humbled
    by the clambering
    of feet
    the colours
    they bleed
    merging
    in a sea of plenty
    of toil and pride
    of shared tables
    of history’s memory
    in the joy
    of connection
    with the land

New York – going DOWN

Video submitted by © J. Matthew Riva

music credit : “burning hell” : by Tom Jones

  • Text by J. Matthew Riva:

    going DOWN
Down… deep-down-underground, in the foundation that supports the most famous skyline in the world, the consummate city, a system of tunnels weaves and slithers. Paint peels, and it cracks. Heat lingers, stale air moves. Humidity clings to walls and people alike. The homeless brush shoulders with the suited elite. Modern day troubadours’ music echoes off old tiled walls and caked I-beams as it battles the screeching metal brakes as subway cars suddenly slow. Dirt is the only marker or time. This is the hot, honest, subterraneal world Mark Rothko captured in his early work. The architecture, lack of natural horizon and the harsh glow of incandescents informed his powerful and transformative work he is famous for. This world is still there, still classless, still dirty, and always moving.
