Personal note by Owen Watkins
- The Kaleyards Gate was built into the city wall in 1275 by monks from the abbey who wanted easy access to their vegetable gardens, or kale yards, on the outside. The gate was locked every night, a custom which has lasted to the present day. Today the gate offers a convenient shortcut between the supermarket car park and the decent food shops in the city centre.
