    One of Amsterdam’s major churches, the Westerkerk is very close to the Ann Frank House, where the young girl hid with her family from the Nazis during the Second World War. I wonder what sort of reception she would have had here before the war.

    The narrow streets of central Amsterdam are full of old merchants’ houses, trade being basis of the wealth of the city and the nation. Many buildings proudly retain traces of their heritage.
