Brussels – Treat

Photo taken near the Grand Place in Brussels on my first visit to this beautiful city in May 2009.
After spending the whole day sightseeing we stopped to enjoy the music and atmosphere in the market place, where everyone seemed to be indulging in Belgian beer and frites. However these city strollers chose a cool alternative.

Chester – Sea King Fisheries

Sea King Fisheries is the only fishmonger left in Chester today. Its stall in Chester Market is a regular destination for our shopping trips. The availability of produce is less predictable than the supermarkets because it can only sell what the fishermen have landed.

Gockhausen (Zurich) – The Geeren Guesthouse

This photograph was taken whilst my dog was taking me for my evening stroll. The Geeren is a typical guesthouse with good food, and of course beer. It is my nearest pub although I rarely imbibe. The crepiscule reminds me of the Magritte images of day and night – The Empire of Lights.
Location, Gockhausen 8044, near Zurich, Switzerland

Chester – Kaleyards Gate

Photo submitted by © Owen Watkins

  • Personal note by Owen Watkins

The Kaleyards Gate was built into the city wall in 1275 by monks from the abbey who wanted easy access to their vegetable gardens, or kale yards, on the outside. The gate was locked every night, a custom which has lasted to the present day. Today the gate offers a convenient shortcut between the supermarket car park and the decent food shops in the city centre.
