Personal note by Shelly Holland
- I’ve been fascinated by The Royal Arcade since childhood, for its olde world feel and beautiful light.
I took these photos in the arcade last summer when 53 decorated elephants were displayed all over the city of Norwich.
The Royal Arcade was designed by local architect George Skipper in 1899 and built on the site of The Royal Hotel. The Royal Hotel built in 1840 had a fairly short life and was built on the site of an old inn The Angel which dated back to the 15th century. The 247 foot arcade follows the shape of the yard of the old Angel Inn.
The Royal Arcade in Norwich is a fine example of Victorian arcades which were the forerunners of todays shopping malls.
