The narrow streets of central Amsterdam are full of old merchants’ houses, trade being basis of the wealth of the city and the nation. Many buildings proudly retain traces of their heritage.

Gockhausen – Mobile Phone

  • Personal note by Tim Grosvenor

This image would not be in the least surprising if it had been taken in London, Manchester or anywhere else in the UK except this was taken in Gockhausen, Switzerland in a quite street away from the urban centre of Zurich.

This is a classic Giles Gilbert Scott K2 phonebox designed for the Post Office, as I believe it was then known. There is obvioulsy a fan of this classic piece of design living close by who went to the trouble of importing this object from the UK. On the other hand, it could just be a new kind of mobile phone. ps there is no telephone inside but it provides shelter from the rain should you wish to make a call from your mobile. More information about this classic design object at www.redphonebox.info/history.htm

This is a busy railway crossing a busy road. At peak times the gates are closed for 15 minutes in the hour, much to the frustration of residents and trades people.

Lyme Regis in the South cost of England. We were spending some days with friends in the neighbourhood. For those who have ever spent their holidays in the North-East coast of Italy as I have all my childhood, where there are all the coast along hotels and beach umbrellas, the way they have developed these tourist places in England is quite funny. I had the feeling something was missing having all that green between the coast villages and not enough beaches!!
